“Cheez Wheez is not good for you!!”

My health journey spans 16 years now….it’s an easy calculation.  Hannah, my oldest daughter, now almost 19, was a sick little thing and when she was between the ages of 2 and 3 years of age, she was on antibiotics 9 times.  That’s when I dug in my heels and decided I had enough of treating her with conventional medicine with recurring illness every 3 weeks, and started seeking something more!  Natural health was the definitive answer and her health improved once I improved her diet.

In between the time that I reformed our diets and opened Body Fuel, I remember shopping in one of the larger grocery stores and pushing Hannah in the cart.  She was a bold little girl, and liked to chat with anyone who would listen to her!  As a shopper passed her, she took the liberty to say, “Cheez Wheez (not Whiz) is not good for you“.  This person gave her a half smile, half smirk that said to me “this kid has the guts to judge what I eat”.

Whether you’re a Cheez Whiz supporter or not, you got to know that there are alternatives out there that will build your health rather than break it down.  Two products that I find that have become household mainstays because they are convenient, versatile and are appealing to kids (big and small), are Cheez Whiz and Nutella.

I was checking in on my Facebook posts this morning, and my friend Leslie Herman of Leslie’s Lifestyle and Nutrition, posted a piece about now Nutella.  They’ve done a great job of marketing their Hazelnut Spread as a health product.  When you really pull apart the ingredient list, it is everything BUT healthy! If you doubt Leslie, check out what Meghan Telpner says about why Nutella should be banned!

I truly believe that good nutrition is all about smart compromising and being innovative in finding better ingredients to make what you may be missing:

NOT Nutella Spread (A much better alternative to Nutella)

1/4 cup hemp seeds
1/3 cup raw cacao
1/4 cup coconut oil or ghee
2 tbsp raw honey
Sea salt
Throw in blender and process until smooth. Add more honey if desired.

Now let’s tackle Cheez “Wheez” Alternative

  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons grass-fed gelatin  (orange container Great Lakes Gelatin)
  • 12 ounces cheddar or Colby cheese, shredded (about 3 cups)
  • 3/4 teaspoon sea salt

Lay plastic wrap in 4″ x 9″ loaf pan and set aside.  Pour milk and cream (if using) in a small saucepan and sprinkle gelatin over to soften. Let sit for about 5 minutes, then heat slowly over medium-low heat until steaming, but DO NOT BOIL.

Meanwhile, shred cheese and pulse in a food processor with the salt. When the milk is hot, turn on the food processor and with the motor running, slowly pour the milk-gelatin mixture over the cheese and process until completely melted and very smooth, 30-60 seconds. Scrape into prepared pan and cover with plastic wrap. Chill for at least three hours. Keeps up to one week in the refrigerator.

And how about a Vegan and Paleo Compliant Version of Cheez Whiz

Ingredients
  • 4 c potatoes, chopped
  • 1 1/2 c fresh carrots, diced large
  • 1/2 c water
  • 1/3 extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 c nutritional yeast
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp parsley
  • 1/2 tsp all spice seasoning
  • Salt/Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Steam or boil the potatoes and carrots until tender.
  2. When that’s done place everything into a blender and run until smooth and creamy. Scrap down the sides if necessary.
  3. Pour over fries, vegetables or eat it straight up because it’s that good.

I hope I’ve inspired you to question the nutritional value of your packaged goods and seek better.  We ARE worth the effort, and our health is reflective of the small changes we make over time!  Do yourself a solid and get creative!
